Cork Chairman retires after 25 years   17/10/2014

AITHEASC AN CHATHAOIRLIGH  at Sciath na Scol AGM

A Cháirde

Ba mhaith liom fáilte is fiche a chur roimh gache éinne go dtí an Chruinniú seo.Tá súil agam gur bhain sibh go léir taitneamh as bhur laethanta saoire agus go bfuil sibh ullamh don bhliain romhainn.

Fellow teachers it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to our A.G.M.. As you are aware I have retired from teaching this September and I will be stepping down as chairperson of Sciath na Scol Chorcai.

Little did I think, in 1975, when I attended my first meeting of Sciath na Scol that nearly 40 years later I would be still involved and be chairing such a wonderful organisation. I can say without fear or favour that Sciath na Scol is the greatest schools’ sporting body in the county ,if not in the country.

This has not happened by accident but by the dedication and hard work of all the teachers who have organised games and run this organisation since its foundation in 1903.

I must pay tribute to the many great servants of Sciath na Scol , whom I have met and worked with over the years- JJ Fennessy, Michael Jackson, Liam Mc Grath ,Jim Turner- who is now our Uachtarán, Br. Canisius ,Br. Sommers ,Dónal Whooley, Ciarán Black – who was the first chairperson to organise our finals in Páirc Uí Chaoimh ,Seán O Chaoimh, Liam Weir and Jerry Walsh -who has served since 1966 and continues to work with us. These are just a sample of the many who dedicated themselves to our Coiste over the years.

To the present officers – all I can say is that we have an exceptional group – led by Máiréad O’Callaghan who is the most efficient and hardest working secretary. Máiréad was elected National Rúnaí in February and is also organising Mini Sevens in Croke Park on All-Ireland days. I have  no doubt that Máiréad will do an excellent job, as always. Comhghairdeas a Mháiréad.

To the many people who have worked on our various committees and Primary Game selectors, Míle Buíochais.

Although I am stepping down, I will continue to work with Sciath na Scol in whatever capacity I am required. Thank you to everyone whom I have worked with over the years and to all the teachers here at this meeting and those organising games in their schools, keep up the good work!
