Leinster Reports 2014 MEATH   29/11/2014

CUMANN NA MBUNSCOL

COISTE NA MIDHE 2014

The past year has been a most successful one for Coiste na Midhe  with a wide range of activities taking place . Once again we are happy to report that  a very high proportion of schools in the county   are involved in our games. The success of  Cumann na mBunscol  in Meath is due primarily  to an active committee ably lead by our  officers, Willie Lyons(Chairperson), Nodlag O’ Neill Forde(Secretary) and Mary Devine(Treasurer)

There are a total of 112 Primary  Schools in Meath and this  figure includes, Junior schools, Church of Ireland schools and a number of new schools who have  recently opened. Effectively we would regard 98  schools as a 100% participation rate. While all schools don’t particulate in all competitions, we are happy to report the involvement of the great majority of  primary schools throughout the county.

The last few years has seen the departure of many our ling serving members, but it is heartening to note the involvement of  younger teachers in the promotion of our games. What is particularly noteworthy is the high number of female teachers  who are actively involved. It is also pleasing to see  many of  our former colleagues come along on Finals Days to help out.

When we met in November last year, the Cross Country  championships had just taken place. We have used  Bellewstown Racecourse  as our venue for the past 20 years. This  event which took place again today consists  of eight races  organised on the basis of age and school size. We were blessed with good weather today and we had  over 1000    young athletes  involved.

A Track and Field event takes place in May each year in the Claremont Stadium Navan. Over 60% of school  normally participate in our Track and Field Day.

Games  normally resume in March with a number of competitions scheduled for the months March-June.

INTO 7’s

Hurling  (67 schools )               Camogie (19 schools)                      Rounders (34 schools)

Junior Football .    A new competition  introduced this year  for 4th/5th classes  where competitions are organised on a regional basis . It was highly successful.

Our hurling finals took place in Trim on June 14th

Mini Game during the Allianz Football League .

This year The Coiste  introduced a mini game programme in conjunction with the Allianz Football League home matches.  One child per school was nominated  in either Boys or Girls football  on match days.  Schools were  listed alphabetically to ensure that that all schools would be invited at some stage  Sixty  pupils were given game time over three Sundays.

Summer programme

The Coiste  organised mini game  tems at  Leinster Football Championship matches   on four occasions.: in Carlow and  for three Croke Park outings.. Team selection  had a restriction of  two children per school, even during the holidays to ensure the involvement of as many schools as possible.  . This was possible thanks to the co-operation of teachers  throughout the county.

Autumn  programme

Football competitions , a major part of our football calendar, commenced  on September  9th.(89 schools)   seven took place last Saturday while the remaining seven will take place  this Saturday in Pairc Tailteann . Referees and linesmen  are all teachers.

This year we introduced a new competition for large schools  who  may not have figured in a final  for a number of years. This initiative has proved to be a outstanding  success.  Stamullen N. S. made their first ever appearance in a final last Saturday , thanks to this new competition.

The Coiste  also ran a referees course this year with the assistance  with the County Board. We do enjoy an excellent relationship with Board who are most helpful at all times.

We hold    7-8 meetings per  year  with our AGM  taking  place  in February.

The  Executive meets 5-6 per year.
